CAJ has made a response to the recent consultation from the Northern Ireland Court Service on Renumeration of Defence Representation in Non Crown Court Proceedings (ie reform of the Legal Aid system), in which we expressed concern about the failure of the Court Service to consider the equality and human rights implications of their proposals. The tragic events of 11th September 2001 in New York and Washington unleashed a “war on terror” with serious human rights consequences around the world. What is the appropriate response to terrorism? How do you effectively respond to terrorism? Is the torture of suspects ever allowed? CAJ’s major report “War on Terror: lessons from Northern Ireland” concludes that human rights abuses fed and fuelled the conflict in Northern Ireland, and may do the same elsewhere.
